The current legal and political frameworks that allow multinational corporations to benefit from tax abuse to the detriment of people and planet and the disproportional gender impact of these illicit financial flows (IFFs). That is the subject of the policy brief published by AWID (Association for Women’s Rights in Development).
AWID is an international feminist membership organization committed to achieving gender equality, sustainable development and women’s human rights.
The policy brief is titled “Illict Financial Flows: Why we should claim these resources for gender, economic and social justice” and was written by Attiya Warris from the University of Nairobi. Scroll down for links to the English, French and Spanish versions of this report.
It explores the basic concept of IFFs and the current legal and political frameworks that allow multinational corporations to benefit from tax abuse, their disproportional gender impact and their drain of critical resources in developing countries.
Among the disproportionate impacts of IFFs on gender justice, AWID lists:

- Unemployment and under-investment in the economy
- Regressive fiscal policies
- Principles of equality and non-discrimination
- Reliance on debt and development cooperation
- Threat to women’s peace and security
